I moved Ali'i in with the mares a few days ago. I have a plan with my weaning Khaliq. I am not a fan of taking the mommy away cold turkey and causing that kind of stress, so I'm going to do it slowly so she's still with her mother, but less and less and eventually on the other side of the fence. I frankly could care less if Khaliq stayed with Aura forever, as I think horses know what to do and the most balanced horse I ever met was still with her mother at 3 yrs old. She was sold at that age and walked out of her yard and never looked back. She was very, very level-headed about the whole thing. But that's my novice opinion. Hahaha!!
Anyway, I want to send Aura to a trainer in the next few months, so I need to start this process. Since Khaliq is so bonded to Summer, and Summer goes out several times a week, baby needs someone else and that'd be cousin Ali'i.
Here are hoof prints all over the side of my poor boy! Like 6 of them!! He got stuck in the corral with Aura and she kicked the doo doo out of him. His eyes were bugging out!!! So, I keep the pen closed now. (You can see her above him in this photo.) Either Summer is in there eating her mush, or now, as of this am, Aura is, to put weight on and spend the day. She can be with Khaliq at night. I suspect the little one is going to stick her head thru the rails to nurse!
I gave Summer some rice bran, she ate, then left some and these two got to finish it. YUMMY!!! Even Summer pushed the baby away gently. Ali'i didn't. He is the bestest horsey!!! My heartthrob!!!
